How do you automatically make anything cooler? By making it transparent, of course! We’ve seen transparent coke and transparent smartphones before, but what about transparent food? Being able to see through something while you eat it has to make it more delicious, right?
Well, that’s what the people who made transparent potato chips thought. Yamayoshi, the same company that brings you delicious wasabeef (wasabi and beef flavor) chips, tried their hand at making chips that give a nice, clear crunch. Check out their video demonstrating the creation of the glass-like chips to see their reaction and then try making some yourself!
The creators of these transparent chips call them “skeleton chips,” perhaps based on the flower that turns transparent when water hits it. They were inspired by seeing transparent chips on TV and immediately knew they had to try it for themselves.
You can watch the video of them making/tasting them here. It’s a NicoNico video though, so if it doesn’t load for you, no worries. Just scroll down for the highlights and step by step recipe.
▼ First, gather the ingredients: chopped potato (steamed, 2 g), potato starch (25 g), water (350 g), oil (1 g), and a pinch of salt.
▼ Then, mix it all together. If you don’t have a fancy mixer that’s fine, but make sure it’s all liquid.
▼ Next, pour it into a frying pan and cook on low heat for 10 minutes.
▼ Let the mixture cool, then pour it onto a baking sheet in transparent chip-shaped puddles.
▼ Bake the little guys in an oven at 100 degrees Celsius (212 Fahrenheit) for…
▼ SIX HOURS?! Geez, these had better be worth it.
▼ You may get hungry during those six hours, so we recommend having a bag of Yamayoshi wasabeef-flavored chips handy for snacking!
▼ Once finished baking, the chips are almost done.
▼ Just fry them in 150 degree Celsius (302 Fahrenheit) oil for…
▼ …five seconds. Phew, that’s a bit more doable.
▼ Add a little salt, and the chips are done! Here is a transparent chip compared to a normal one.
▼ And time for the taste test! The final verdict? “Very crunchy. It gets better and better the more you eat. A very new flavor.”
The taste-tester is probably right on this one, if the sound of the crunch when he takes a bite is any indication. It could nearly blow out your speakers!
So what do you think? Would you buy a bag of transparent chips? Would you go through all the effort and six hours of waiting to make some? Let us know in the comments!
